THE VOICE OF AUTUMN

The voice of Autumn

Do you recognize me? My name is Autumn. My surname is Turkey. You've heard about Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. That's my country. It's beautiful like this rose. I have a big family. There are 70 million of us and we live all over Turkey. I visit my family every year. This year I've decided to send you the photos from Cappadoccia. Look how icredible Fairy chimneys in Goereme look. They are houses made by my mother. And you know my mother, it's Nature. She is very handy and can make great staff. And, believe it or not, she gives everything she makes for free. Isn't she fabulous?

My favourite colours are yellow, brown and red. That's why I always dress trees in these colours. But trees like to change clothes. Do you know what they put on when they take off my clothes? Listen to that wonderful music. It has the same name like me. Do you know who composed it? It sounds a little bit like me. When I speak you can hear the wind and rain. And when I'm quiet you can feel the warmth of the Sun.

Every year I come on 23rd September and stay until 20th December. If you want to meet me again see you next year, same time. And you choose the place, because I'm everywhere. Just look and listen carefully.

Here is the VIDEO!

A DOCUMENTARY LESSON: MY WAY TO SCHOOL

OBJECTIVE: speaking about everyday life, a documentary

SKILLS: listening, speaking, writing

GRAMMAR: present simple and present continuous tense

VOCABULARY: (depends on the documentary you use: transport, clothes, weather, nature, school)

ADDED VALUE OF THE PROJECT: students learn about everyday lives of their peers abroad from real situations and people and raising awareness about how similar children's lives are no matter where they live J

1. Write on the board for students to copy in their notebooks the questions regarding documentaries:

What do I know? (it's about real life, people, a camera...)

What do I think I know? (France, Lummiere...)

What do I want to know? (the first documentary, where can I study film art)

2. Give your students some time to write the answers. When they have finished, discuss their answers with the whole class.
3. A DOCUMENTARY: the first documentaries were called „actuality films“ (a train entering a station https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dgLEDdFddk) the word documentary was coined in 1926.

Ask your students which word is „hiding“ in the word „documentary“ – „document“. What does it tell us about the documentaries? (documents have to be true and so do the documentaries, they are nonfictional) Ask if they have ever watched a documentary and what it was about. What can a documentary be about (animals, nature, people, factories, schools, history...)

4. Tell them they are going to watch a documentary/ documentaries about the way to school and ask what they think they will see (How do the students go to school? How much time do they need to get to school? What do they talk about on their way to school?)
5. After watching, ask students who made the documentary and what the person was talking about. Could they see what they thought they would see? Then start asking questions like: How many students are playing football? What colour is the school building? Which flags are in the school corridor? What is the girl wearing? Who could you see in the gym? How many people are there in the gym? What are they doing? What's the weather like? What noises can you hear? Where is the school (in the village or in the country)? You can adapt the questions according to the documentary you want to use.
6. Watch the documentary again and pause it in order to answer the questions and discuss whether the students were right or wrong in their answers or how close they were in their assumptions.
7. Discuss with your students how similar or different the ways to schools are from theirs.
8. Homework: you can ask your students to write a passage using the answers (you can put it on your school website or in the school newspapers) or maybe even make their own first documentary in English.

IT'S PARTY TIME!!! Justin Bieber: Mistletoe LESSON ACTIVITES

GOAL: to have a lot of fun in the English classroom, to motivate students to learn new vocabulary and pronunciation, to develop students' creativity.

For the teacher: to learn about students' taste in music and use this for motivation in the future.

The lesson:

1. Hand out the Christmas vocabulary worksheet and let the students match the words and pictures. (for lower level classes I would allow the use of a dictionary- you can also show them where to find an on-line dictionary and teach them how to use it)
2. When they have finished ask them to say the words they have written and help with pronunciation and meanings if necessary.
3. Ask your students to discuss in pairs how these words are related to the Christmas time.
4. Ask for feedback and discuss in class the connection of thewords in the worksheet and Christmas. In addition you can also ask them to say which words would they add to the list of Christmas words and ask for explanation. (In class you can make your students' Christmas vocabulary list like: Christmas tree: because we decorate it on Christmas eve etc.)
5. Give your students the Mistletoe lyrics worksheet and let them fill in the spaces with the missing words.
6. Check.
7. Let your students listen to the song again and ask them to sing. You, the teacher, should also sing along J
8. As a surprise you can let them watch the video our students made in the eTwinning project: ACTION ENGLISH and inspire them to record their own Mistletoe or some other video and learn English in the most amusing way: through singing and music.

Additional information:

1. explain your studets what Lip sync is and ask them to choose their favourite song in English and learn the words by heart. (ask them to write the title of the songs so you can prepare the worksheets)
2. Record your sudents for an eTwinning project or any other school project or school event. Fun, motivation, motivating lesson material and knowledge guaranteed.

Enjoy the lesson and be inspired,

Alenka

Justin Bieber / Mistletoe (lyrics)

It's the most beautiful time of the year,
Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer,
I should be playing in the winter snow,

But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

I don't wanna miss out on the holiday,
But I can't stop staring at your face,
I should be playing in the winter snow,
But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you,
With you, under the mistletoe

Everyone's gathering around the fire,
Chestnuts roasting like a hot July,
I should be chillin' with my folks, I know,
But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

Word on the streets Santa's coming tonight,
Reindeer flying through the sky so high,
I should be makin' a list I know,
But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

With you, shawty with you,
With you, shawty with you,
With you, under the mistletoe,

With you, shawty with you,
With you, shawty with you,
With you, under the mistletoe,

Hey love, the Wise Men followed the stars,
The way I follow my heart,
And it led me to a miracle.

Hey love, don't you buy me nothing, (don't you buy me nothing)
'Cause I am feeling one thing,
Your lips on my lips,
That's a merry merry Christmas.

It's the most beautiful time of the year,
Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer,
I should be playing in the winter snow,
But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

I don't wanna miss out on the holidays,
But I can't stop staring at your face,
I should be playing in the winter snow,
But I'mma be under the mistletoe.

With you, shawty with you,
With you, shawty with you,
With you, under the mistletoe,

With you, shawty with you,
With you, shawty with you,
With you, under the mistletoe,

Kiss me underneath the mistletoe,
Show me baby that you love me so,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

Kiss me underneath the mistletoe,
Show me baby that you love me so,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

yeahhhhhhh.
